Santa, poorly disguised as the Brown Messenger, brought a fine little package by today. A slightly delayed Christmas gift (Thanks, Steve!!) of a pair of Adidas GSG9 boots. My squeels of glee left several of the neighbors wondering exactly what was going on in my shop this time...I have never had a pair of these before, and now I know what all of the fuss is about. They are quite simply superbly crafted boots. Comfortable right out of the box, lightweight, plenty of support, all leather. Gobs of arch support. Comfort, and lots of it. The only other combat type boots I have had for the last couple of years are the less expensive Bates Dura Shocks, which are very comfortable and have served very well indeed. The Adidas have better support, better insoles, and better leather by far. They are a bit slower to lace up and do not breathe as easily as the nylon topped Bates, but I plan on installing side vents and D rings on the Adidas. The Adidas offer a LOT more support than the Bates did. The soles of the Adidas, as new, are a might slippery on wet tile but I am told that they settle down a bit after they scuff up. My sneaking suspicion is that the mold release on the sole will get cleaned off with a bit of hot soapy water or naptha, and render them more tractile on the tile. Anyway, I have GSG9 happy feet, and I highly recommend the experience.

Congrats on the gift - Over the years I have worn a 'couple' pairs of Adidas GSG9 boots and here are a few tips;1) Once they are broken in, which doesn't take long, they are probably the most comfortable boots you'll ever wear. 2) The soles wear out way too quick. They do provide good traction over most surfaces once broken in. 3) Thay are RUDE expensive - I saw a pair for sale in Berlin for way over $200 - no where near worth that. 4) Quickly befriend somebody that can DX them for you or don't wear them that often or you'll be shocked how quick you wear them out - so will who ever purchased them for you ( get ready Steve ) Think of them as high performance car tires - expensive, don't last long but nothing else is the same. They do have a high neato - torpedo factor ( which fades quckly if you have to buy them yourself ) and I'm sure Adidas thinks there famous because of the GSG9 but in fact the group that made them famous is on this side of the pond....... Ditto on the above comments. Great boot, super comfy, tough uppers, crappy soles (wear wise). My soles are completely worn through in some spots yet fine in others---weird feet I guess.Has anyone tried to resole them or is it not possible because of the glued-on construction? IP: Logged |

Ditto on all the abpove comments.I feel like a Ballerina in them compared to Danner's, Bates etc .et al. Wish I could figure out how to resole them. Snort!! Guffaw! BWAHAHAHAHA! ROTFLMAO. "I feel like a Ballerina in them compared to Danner's, Bates etc .et al."The mental picture of my good friend Kensho, heavily armed but pirroetting in a tutu to the strains of Swan Lake lept to my mind, and there it nearly caused me brain damage. Sorry Kensho, but that caused too many mental gears to grind. Imagine a 200 pound pitbull with a machinegun, wearing ballet slippers, and you are halfway there... BWAHAHAHAHA! IP: Logged |

It was the thought of Kensho in a pink tutu that had me spewing cornflakes... Rock and Resole, in Boulder Colorado can resole GSG9s. ------------------ MD Labs IP: Logged |

He actually has little skinny ankles, so I was able to picture him in a tutu without even a smirk (this is usually the part where Kensho plants a skinny ankle on the side of my head and there is nothing I can do about it). As a very flat footed knuckle dragger, I have avoided the Adidas because I go through the soles of boots so quick. I would be very interested in any info on resoling them. ------------------ He who advances is sure of heaven, he who retreats is sure of eternal damnation. IP: Logged |

Rock & Resole 2500 N 47th St. Boulder CO 80301 (303) 444-7411Steve: Do you know if R&R resoles the Adidas GSG9's with the factory "rubber nubbies" sole or something normal like the regular Vibrams? (And yes, I could've called and asked them myself, but I figure you'd know already...) IP: Logged |

The Adidas are pretty groovy, and my hands down favorite for the urban jungle. The nubbed soles aren't always great on wet tile. I don't weigh much (w/o my loadout anyway), so I find that the soles wear ok for me. Rock and Resole does a resole with dime sized nubs on it. It's called their 5.10 resole, and it's $35/pair with a promised turnaround under 2 weeks. IP: Logged |

As mentioned they can be resoled. I have a pair that was resoled by a climber friend. For certain applications I find the resoled ones superior. Looking for the resoling info.IP: Logged |

I'm not a balaclava-ed operator, but I am an experienced rockclimber and member of the "El Capitan summit via the hard way" club. Many of the good resolers out West can put on a sole made by Vibram that is very impressive. It is a moderately lugged item that is made of climbing rubber, a.k.a. "sticky" rubber. It is hardwearing and provides surprising traction. I have them on some various low-cut shoes. You get good traction from 1) the physical configuration of the sole and 2) the special chemical composition of the rubber. You guys want to talk about overpriced footwear? Don't get me started about climbing shoes... IP: Logged |

There is no doubt that these boots are comfortable and useful for a small range of actions. They are also priced high, but so is most else in this community. In the ealy 70's Adidas made a very similar boot for free fallers called the "Patrick". It had white soles and red stripes, but i recall it being very light and comfortable. They cost about $20.00I used to work at an address where we were issued two pair of the current boots every 6 months or when they wore out- which was usually sooner then later. Then again a CO at another unit refused to allow them to be worn, a decision that all but some of the MFF instructors agreed with. It just isn't a good greenside boot. There is a mystique about the boots of course. I remember reading a story in one of the gun rags whereby the author deemed an instructor to be extremely capable because he was wearing them. Sigh.... Extreme Alpinist and genuine hard guy Mark Twight has had several pair resoled with the sticky substance mentioned in some of the preceeding posts. I know that he sent me the address but i misplaced it. Then again, i don't wear them anymore. ------------------ S/F Pat Sends IP: Logged |

Here's a challenge: Get them wet and then try to sneak around on a polished floor. They squeak like hell. Otherwise and extremely comfortable boot. I've had several pair and the last pair has actually lasted quite a while. They are much better for climbing than standard Danners/Bates/Jungles. IP: Logged |

I have a pair I still wear on occassion. You guys that just got yours will see this eventually, the leg portion of the boot will begin to fall apart. It just peels off, both inside and out. IP: Logged |

Gotta love GSG9s, I live in an urban area so they don't see much mud. VERY good sole for pavement, cement, and floor tile. Don't to squat in mud. My daily attire is usually a pair of Royal Robbins Solid color BDUs and a "polo style" shirt from any number of knife/gun/training companies and programs and they fit right in with what I wear.------------------ To Some They Are Accessories... The GSG9 is a very good boot, to get rid of the "new boot slide" spray the soles down with brake cleaner, being careful to avoid the uppers. Now you have nice "sticky" soles. Also NuShoe will put a nice Vibram sole on them for $65.00. I fell one to many times on wet tile with pair number 4 circa (97) and I had the soles replaced with the Vibram chemical sole available by special order. The safety sole is highly slip resistant, puncture resistant with an ANSI safety insert and designed for high chemical resistance with an OSHA approved slip resistant tread compound. The soles cost me $100 then and still have 80% tread remaining. I laced in covered black zippers and have not tied or relaced my boots in years. For use in the muck and jungle travel I use Rocky Gortex socks over my boot socks with taped openings and my feet stay clean, mostly comfortable and bug free. When the locale turns to ice and snow these boots are not very good, but a pair of Atlas Snow Trackers fit like a glove and offer a quick solution while allowing you to stay in "lightweight" quick boots. ------------------ Think, Plan, Train Be Safe. What is the general attitude towards Danner? Never wore the Adidas, but its been my experience that Danner makes the best boot. But if I'm wrong, I would rather be wrong as the Adidas are cheaper. I'm not a highspeed, cool guy, but I am a fashion icon... for the money, Belleville 800TLS gets my vote. They have the Vibram sole, gore-tex, and you can run very well in them... Run about $130. IP: Logged |

My partner bought a pair for himself for Christmas. He is a huge Danner fan. I tried on his Adidas after he got them..they felt good and sweet. I dont know about wearing them for daily partol though since we have alot of woods in our jurisdition and the mis-understood/abused/parents were both alcoholic's misguided youths seem to like to play in the woods when they run. My question..what is the deal with the really thin laces on the Adidas? It seems to me like it is too thin to last and I dont know if para-cord will fit. Any suggestions?IP: Logged |

I've got a pair of GSG9's that are going on 2 yrs old, worn a lot, and the weeny little laces are still holding up. They are indeed cheesy for such a high dollar boot. The good thing with those laces is that they bite well -- ie. once tied, the knots stay put and don't slip out.IP: Logged |
