I am considering taking my RV into Canada for a road trip. I know that pistols are a big no-no going into Canada, but does anyone know if it is permissible to take a shotgun or a pistol-caliber rifle into Canada? I would want it just for RV defense while on the road.

You could contact the Canadian Bureau of Consular Affairs: http://travel.state.gov/canada.html

You can see how broken the concept of individual rights are in our neighbor to the North by viewing the Canadian Firearms Centre website: http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/

from their web page:

"blah...blah...blah...Canada has three classes of firearms: non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited. Non-restricted firearms include most ordinary hunting rifles and shotguns. These may be brought temporarily into Canada for sporting or hunting use during hunting season, use in competitions, in-transit movement through Canada, or personal protection against wildlife in remote areas of Canada. Anyone wishing to bring hunting rifles into Canada must be at least 18 years old, and the firearm must be properly stored for transport. Restricted firearms are primarily handguns; however, pepper spray and mace...blah...blah...blah."

Reading it is like getting a lecture from my mother.

There's also a $50 (I think) fee per weapon but it's in Canadian currency so it's only like $5 American . The permit is good for unlimited trips for one year for that specific weapon.

JB... I believe the $50 covers a group of firearms, not just one.

The whole scoop is right here:

More information and ideas in an opinion piece I wrote at The Firing Line on Canada's recent gunlaw debacle:

Daguerre,

You're right. I wonder if the law has changed because my Dad has been wondering how he was going to get his guns out of Alaska without paying through the nose. I'll have to let him know that it is only $50 for all.

Thanks!
